10/6/09 The 209-2010 Schedule is set.
Moving down in classification was supposed to make things easier for the Warrior basketball team. Leaving a district with larger teams such as Hixson, East Ridge and Howard was supposed to lighten the load. However, in high school basketball, just as in most of life, what is supposed to happen doesn’t always work out that way.
One glance at Marion’s 09-10 schedule will show that, despite moving to District 6A, the Warrior will still have to come out ready to play every game. Their non-district schedule features 10 of 12 games against opponents from higher classifications. Even the Region 3A Jamboree, which is used as a pre-season warm-up, matches Marion County against Chattanooga School for Arts and Sciences, who went to sectionals in 2008 and were state runners-up in 2007. Following the “warm-up” in the Jamboree, the Warriors open a 10 game road trip with a Hall-of-Champions game at District 5AAA Rhea County. They will also travel to District 3A Tellico Plains for another Hall-of-Champions game.
The remainder of the non-district schedule includes the continuation of the long-time rivalries with Grundy County, Sequatchie County, and Bledsoe County. In addition, Marion will square off against two formidable opponents in the Grace Baptist Academy Christmas Classic. McCallie is looking to have one of it’s best season in recent years, due in large part to two 6’ 8” transfers from Atlanta, Ga. This year’s Blue Raider team is athletically the best top to bottom in quite some time. Marion will also compete against the host team, Grace Academy. Grace has been a perennial basketball power for some time now. They were state runners-up in 2006 and most recently, they were state semi-finalists last season. The final non-district opponent is a relatively new rival. Opting not to participate in a Thanksgiving tournament this year, the Warriors will continue the home/home series with former District 6AA opponent, Chattanooga Christian School.
District 6A will prove to have it’s own share of tough games. Following the exciting games from last year, this year’s meetings with South Pittsburg will carry even more excitement as district standings will be at stake. With seniors Jiajuan Fennell, Terrell Robinson and Malcom Jones, as well as some talented underclassmen, it is easy to see why many think the road to the District Championship travels through South Pittsburg, Tn. Another team that will have a shot at the championship is Signal Mountain, who is coached by former UTC Moc, Wes Moore. Marion opens it’s district play on November 30th at Richard Hardy. Rounding out District 6A opponents will be Whitwell, Lookout Valley, Sale Creek and fellow newcomer, Van Buren County.
This year offers to bring great basketball action and tough competition. The game atmosphere will undoubtedly be electric. The Warriors wish to invite everyone out to our games and hope that you will come offer your support.
Good Luck Warriors!
